IC
Name: Campion, Alec (Technically, Lord David Alexander Tielman Campion of Campion and Tremontaine, Duke of Riverside)
Fandom: Swordspoint and The Privilege of the Sword by Ellen Kushner (Since Privilege takes place 18 years after the canon point from which I’ll be taking Alec, I concentrated mostly on Swordspoint for the purposes of this app.)
History link: Alec is the ostracized grandson of the Dread Duchess Tremontaine, a woman (in)famous for her stunning beauty, impeccable manners, and maybe killing her husband. Let's just say the family traits bred through, at least that last one.

Alec grew up very close to his younger sister, Janine, blithely unaware of his parents' machinations to insinuate the family back into the Duchess's favor. The family conflict came to a head when Alec was 17 and Janine 14. The Duchess refused to foster Janine and bring her out into Society; Alec's mother reacted by arranging a rushed marriage to an aging minor lord. Janine was understandably put out, and confided in her brother that she'd rather “run away than marry that old man.” Alec took her literally and arranged for them to flee together, but Janine (who was mostly being an adolescent girl prone to hysterics) sucked it up and went through with the ceremony.

When Alec discovered his sister's “betrayal,” he went a little bit crazy. In an effort to escape his parents, he accepted his Grandmother's invitation to come live with her on the Hill. Of course, as soon as his parents began thinking maybe he could work them back into the fold, the life of endless luxury and vice got old. Alec did the unthinkable, he ran away to University. It was eccentric (what did a titled young man need learning for?) but tolerable. At least, it was until all of his friends were expelled for defying the teachers. No one would touch Alec (they didn't want to offend his grandmother) but Alec made a great show of leaving with them, anyway.

He ended up in Riverside, the most dangerous district of the city, and would have died the first night had he not met Richard St. Vier, the greatest swordsman in the history of ever. Richard found the young nobleman student man intriguing, and decided to protect him in the dangerous underworld. Alec, for his part, adored having someone willing to kill on his command and being able to cheat at dice with impunity.

Alec lived happily (by his twisted standards) with Richard until he was kidnapped by Lord Horn in a blackmail attempt on Richard. It worked, and Alec was released, but Richard killed Lord Horn in retaliation. Richard was caught and put on trial for Horn’s death, and Alec returned to his grandmother for aid in freeing his lover. The political manipulation was successful, and shortly after, Alec returned to Riverside to resume his life with Richard.

Age: Vaguely twenty-something, canon is unspecific.
Canon point: Just after the events of Swordspoint, so post Richard’s trial. Prior to being named his grandmother’s heir or Richard going blind.

Personality: Alec is entitled, self-centered, snarky, rude, crude, ruthless, vicious bloodthirsty, and a little mad. And that's in the first five minutes. Richard tolerates Alec because Alec interests him. Everyone else tolerates Alec because Richard will kill them if they hurt the little bitch. A few select others tolerate Alec because he has a great deal of money (or did, before he came here) and they're hoping for hand-outs. Alec believes this is exactly the way life should be.

Overall, Alec has very few strong opinions at all. It's so tiring to care that much. A notable exception would be boredom; Alec hates being bored. Mind you, his idea of entertaining generally entails sex, violence, mind-altering substances, or some combination of the three. He's funny enough, if you like your humor at the expense of others. (He does, and it makes him feel superior when nobody else gets the joke.) Mostly he makes his own fun by manipulating people and watching the inevitable chaos unfold. The bloodier, the better. He treats people as ornaments; he collects the ones he finds particularly amusing or particularly pathetic, and the only exception to this is Richard, who he genuinely cares for.

Alec is very much the product of an abusive childhood. His mother was emotionally and physically abusive, alternately ignoring or beating both him and his sister. When they misbehaved, they were locked in the storage cellar. He attributes his self-destructive behaviors and drug abuse to his mother’s treatment of them as children, and his difficulties connecting to other people are undoubtedly also related. Although he’s not as insane as he pretends to be, he is unstable, and he uses and exaggerates that instability to get what he wants.

Despite all of it, Alec is referred to in the books as an egalitarian, and is something of an idealist. He sees the inequality of his society and is very affected by it. His goal is to become the “Duke of Riverside,” despite Riverside being a district of the capital city and not a proper duchy in its own right. There are two types of people in Riverside: those who want to be there, and those who can’t be anywhere else. By buying up the land and leasing it back to its current occupants, he hopes to offer some protection to the helpless portion of that population. In the future, he even establishes an orphanage and takes one of the orphans into his household, stating, “Other people do not deserve to be starved or fucked before they know what the word means, just because they have no one.” Even before becoming Duke Tremontaine, he complained of the way servants are treated and how women are married off like livestock. Despite all his cynicism, Alec honestly wishes to see the world made into a better place.

Prose sample: Riverside in the summer. Trapped between the two rivers, the air was heavy and stagnant and it stank of rot. Rotting fish, rotting excrement, rotting bodies most likely, not that he’d know anything about that. He wrinkled up his nose as he let both the book and himself fall back on the chaise. Why would anyone ever choose to live here?

At least it was cooler. On the Hill, they were probably baking in the sun. The ladies were undoubtedly sprawled all over the place, their skirts spread artistically as they fanned themselves with feathers or babies’ skins. Whatever the latest trend was. He hoped the gentlemen tripped over them. “I don’t miss it,” he told the kitten, who, in the absence of the book, had come to investigate his chest. The tiny beast was clearly pleased, because it curled up in the hollow of his sternum, its whole body shaking with tiny purrs.

“I don’t know why Richard wants a parrot. You’re much more sensible. A fierce guardian. Now it’s hot; move.” His mind was jumping from one topic to the next without any sort of logical progression. He found he didn’t like it very much and decided it must be the heat. It certainly wasn’t any cooler, lounging around like this.

That was it. His mind made up, he lifted the kitten from his chest and dropped it onto the chaise unceremoniously. The kitten merely began kneading the fabric, curling up into a tight ball once more. “Disaffected little monster, aren’t you?” he said fondly as he got up. He made his way into the bedroom, where Richard was still sleeping, and kicked the foot of the bed. “It smells like shit in here. Get up. We’re going out.”

Permissions/Anti Permissions Post

Fighting: Alec has absolutely no physical skills with which to defend himself. Wipe the floor with him. (Richard will take care of you later.)

Mind control, telepathy: Situational. Again, Alec has no actual immunities to this kind of attack, other than an extremely strong (and disagreeable) personality.

Sex: Alec is enthusiastically pansexual. He especially enjoys novelty, so go ahead and try to shock him.

Yes: Bondage, toys, forced oral, double penetration, rimming, sensory dep, temperature play, group play, slave play, hard and soft impact, dubcon, sharing partners, size play, manhandling, domination, submission, blood play.

Negotiable: Non-con, and anything else not explicitly stated her.

No: Vore, gore, scat, urine/watersports, menstruation, lactation, children/child play, infantalization, pregnancy, lactaion, furry, bestiality.

Anti-Permissions: Please read!
The short version is here:

Threads with Alec may include discussions of or references to triggering subjects, including:
Casual racism or classism
Child abuse
Mental illness, self-harm, and attempted suicide
Addiction
Rape

If there is a subject you don't wish Alec to discuss with your muse, or if you wish to avoid Alec entirely in-game, please let me know here. I will always do my best to keep potentially triggering material locked and cut, but I don't want to throw Alec at people who would rather avoid him.

The long version, or rather, why Alec is the way he is. (TW: Everything listed above, as well as Spoilers)

Alec comes from a time where women are essentially property, the lower classes are also essentially property, and anyone Other is classified as a savage. This leads to a lot of deeply ingrained racism, sexism, classism, and any other ism you can think of. While Alec himself does no share these believes (he's the closest thing to enlightened the series offers) he is a bastard. That means, if he finds out he can get a reaction with misogynistic comments or racial slurs, he will keep making them.

Alec suffers from mental illness and lack of treatment. Because his world has no diagnostic criteria, it's never clearly spelled out in canon. It's explicitly stated that he (and several other members of his family) suffers from depression, which he self-medicates and self-harms to alleviate. He has an addictive personality, which makes his attempts to self-medicate more destructive. He shows varying levels of addiction to drugs, alcohol, gambling, and sex throughout the series. Fanon theories have also suggested that he may be suffering from Bipolar Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and some kind of Impulse Control disorder. Both books allude to a history of mental illness from both sides of his mother's family.

Canon explicitly states that Alec (and his sister) were neglected and beaten as children. It is also tacitly stated in Swordspoint that he was raped (as an adult) by Lord Horn. Privilege, especially, deals with Alec's thoughts on rape, arranged marriage, and child abuse, all of which he speaks out against and views as equal evils. However, while he takes a modern view on assault and abuse, he still uses problematic speech when discussing the subjects. For instance, at one point he refers to rape as 'sampling the wares before purchase,'. So even when Alec is operating with decent morals, he can still manage to be offensive and disgusting.

Oh, this is fascinating!

Every pipe, it would appear! How charming! It's almost as though the Deities knew that cheap fermented carbohydrates were exactly what I wanted to celebrate corrupt, internalized religion.

But you can drink your bath water! I wouldn't recommend it for most of you, unwashed heathens that you are. But I can. How grand! Let the whiskey -- er, beer -- flow!

Not that I trust alcohol from this color.

Yesterday's curse was so inspiring that I just felt I had to offer my own -- well, I think it's art. But I suppose you'll have to judge for yourselves. I'm sure you'll scorn me. You always do.

I give you, dear City...

An Ode To Cain Hargreaves.
Presented in Villanelle

And so becomes our good friend Cain:
this tale's of he, of might and steel --
when all's been told, a royal pain.

Tho' he (it's said) is never vain
there's little doubt he flaunts and preens
as well becomes our good friend Cain.

And well he should, one without shame.
A peerless peer, if well you will.
When all's been told, he's quite a pain.

Yet never would he fib, nor fain
to frolic. An iron spine (braced by
a broomstick) has our good friend Cain.

Still, to us lowly proles he'll deign
to speak, advise or nose about
where he's unwanted. S'truth, a pain.

So o're us all may long he reign
(though like the oxen, he is lame)
a haughty, stuffy, grumpy pain
is he, Hargreaves, our dear friend Cain.

That was quite enjoyable, actually. Who shall I honor next? Luke? Anita, I'm afraid your name provides simply too few rhyming opportunities.

[Accidental Video]

[Alec stands at the top of the Titanic slide in Xanadu, gazing out over the gardens. He's lost his loose scholar robes and is wearing a billowing peasant shirt, slashed open down the front and tucked into the waistband of -- is that a kilt? His legs are encased in stocking and boots. And while he never speaks, there is an audio component to this post, a voice over. almost like narration.]

He stood at the precipice and looked out over the rocky fields to the ocean beyond. This was it. This was all they had left of their homes, their freedom.

It was hard land -- the soil was shallow and strewn about with rocks, from pebbles to boulders, that could foil plows and flounder animals. Unfit for farming, unfit for grazing -- unfit for everything, really. But all their struggles were worthwhile, to know it was theirs. They couldn't be evicted from this land on false charges, or forced into indentured labor to keep their homes. Moreover, their women would be safe from the lurid eyes of the Anglo "lords". He would see his mother, his sisters able to go about their daily business without fear in their eyes.

He just wished he could get
her out of his head. The landlord's daughter, with her pouting red lips and glossy chestnut curls. Her image had swum in his mind, laughing, tormented him through the long winter. Though he'd fought to forget, he couldn't. He couldn't give up their nights together -- the silky run of her skin under his hands, the gentle rise and fall of the bosom her bodice did so little to conceal --

But that had been before, hadn't it? Before things changed. Before she'd betrayed him.

Forget her! his conscious roared. It was the right thing to do -- he had no other options.

But how could he? How could he ever sacrifice what they'd had? All they'd shared?

[OOC: If you decide to banish her from your heart forever, turn to page two.

If you're not yet ready to say goodbye, turn to page five.]

There seems to be a large she-cat following me around, speaking to me.

[A quick sweep around the apartment shows nothing out of the ordinary, and then a loud yowl is heard.]

Well, princess, you decided to explore the bathroom.

[A few seconds later, a very wet and very unhappy ocelot stomps out of the bathroom, shaking water from its paws. Then the camera refocuses on Alec's face.]

A curse, I suppose. We can't leave each others' presences.

Ah well. At least she's stunningly attractive, as far as animals go.
